Target counting is now part of your rotation
Almost every spec has a single target priority and a multi target priority, and the switch point is not "there are several mobs" but "there are several mobs that will live long enough". Pressing the cleave spender into two mobs that die anyway is a loss; pressing single target into a stacked pack is a bigger one.
The practical version is to decide the shape of the pull before you press anything: is this a burst pack, a cleave pack, or a priority-target pack. Then commit for the whole pull instead of relitigating it every global.
Interrupts and dispels are your job now
In raid, utility is scheduled. In Mythic+ it is reactive, it happens at the same time as your damage, and it matters more than your damage: one missed interrupt can be the whole pull. This is why people who play well in raid feel clumsy in keys. They are being asked to watch four cast bars and a debuff while holding a priority.
Set up an interrupt display you cannot miss, agree with your group who takes what, and accept that stopping your rotation for an interrupt is correct.
Cooldowns are per-pack decisions
Raid cooldowns are answers to a known timeline. In a key, using your big window on the wrong pack costs you nothing visible and everything real, because you will arrive at the pack that mattered with it down. The habit worth building is asking whether this pack is worth the window, and being willing to press nothing but the filler through an easy trash pull.
Movement is constant, not occasional
You are repositioning almost the whole dungeon. If your rotation only works standing still, you are giving up a large fraction of a key’s worth of damage, and the fix is the same as in raid: learn the moving version of the priority as its own thing.
Where an assistant helps most
Mythic+ is where a rotation assistant is worth the most, because the extra jobs are exactly the jobs that a profile can hold at once. Rice Rotations tracks target count and switches the priority when the pack actually justifies it, fires interrupts on the casts you tell it to care about, dispels when the debuff lands rather than four seconds later, presses defensives as damage arrives and keeps the moving version of the rotation running while you kite.
Because settings are per spec, a raid profile and a key profile of the same spec can behave differently: more conservative cooldown usage in one, aggressive cleave in the other.
- Reacts to the pull instead of replaying a fixed list
- Interrupts and dispels handled while the rotation continues
- Multi target priority used when the pack justifies it
- Defensives pressed as damage lands, which is where keys are actually lost
Questions
- Why is my Mythic+ damage so much worse than my raid damage?
- Because Mythic+ adds target counting, interrupt duty, per-pack cooldown decisions and constant movement on top of the same rotation. Most of the gap is those four things, not the rotation itself.
- Can an assistant handle interrupts in a key?
- Yes, and it is one of the strongest reasons to use one: interrupts are reaction-speed work that has to happen while your rotation continues, which is precisely what humans drop first.
