Why your DPS is lower than the guides say it should be

You read the guide, you copied the talent string, your gear is roughly what the guide assumes, and you are still doing noticeably less damage than people in similar gear. That gap is almost never the build. It is execution, and execution breaks down in a small number of predictable ways.

Here they are in the order they usually cost the most, with the fix for each. None of this requires a subscription to anything: the first three you can fix tonight by yourself.

1. Wasted globals

Every second of a fight is roughly one global cooldown, and every global you do not spend is damage you will never get back. Watch a log of your own pull and count the gaps: a global lost to reading a boss timer, a global lost to a mis-click, a global lost because you were between abilities and did not have a filler queued. Twenty wasted globals in a five minute fight is a double digit percentage of your damage.

The fix is boring and it works: pick a filler you always press when nothing better is available, and never stand there deciding. If you can hold a rhythm of pressing something every global for the whole pull, you are already ahead of most of the people you are comparing yourself to.

2. Cooldown drift

Most specs have two or three cooldowns meant to be used together, and their timers are not the same length. If you press each one the moment it comes up, they drift apart, and after ten minutes your burst window is three separate small windows instead of one large one. Damage does not scale linearly here: overlapping buffs multiply.

The fix is to decide which cooldown is the anchor and hold the others for it, accepting that you will sit on a button for a few seconds. Almost every parse difference between an average player and a good one on the same spec is visible as this one behaviour.

3. Dropped uptime

Dots, bleeds, mitigation buffs, weapon imbues, stack-based buffs, disease spread, the cleave tag that makes your builder hit five targets. These are all maintenance, they all fall off silently, and they are the first thing anyone loses when a mechanic starts. A bleed that is up eighty percent of the time instead of ninety-eight is a straight damage loss with no visible symptom.

The fix is to move maintenance onto something you cannot ignore: an aura on your screen at a size you cannot miss, positioned where you actually look. If you are tracking six things, you will drop the sixth one; if you are tracking six things and dodging, you will drop three.

4. Movement

Every spec has a version of its rotation that works while moving, and most players simply stop pressing buttons instead. Casters have instants, hunters have everything, melee have their fillers. This is where Mythic+ damage disappears: the pull is thirty seconds long and you spent eight of them repositioning in silence.

The fix is to learn the moving version of your priority as a separate thing you practise, not as an emergency. It is worth more than any talent choice you are agonising over.

Where an assistant fits

All four of those problems are execution problems, which is exactly what a rotation assistant is for. Rice Rotations reads the fight from your screen, decides what comes next and presses the key, from a second PC or a virtual machine, so globals are not wasted, cooldowns do not drift, maintenance does not lapse and the moving version of the priority keeps running while you play mechanics.

It does not do the parts that are actually you: positioning, route, pull timing, cooldown calls for the group, and knowing when to stop pressing damage and start pressing survival. That split is the point. You keep the decisions and hand over the keyboard work.

Questions

Is my low DPS a gear problem?
Usually not, unless you are many item levels behind. Two players in the same gear routinely differ by a large margin, and almost all of that gap is globals used, cooldown overlap and uptime rather than stats.
Will a rotation assistant fix my parses?
It fixes the execution half: no wasted globals, no cooldown drift, no dropped maintenance. It cannot fix standing in the wrong place, dying to a mechanic or pulling at the wrong time, which is also a large part of a parse.
